UPDATE New International Airport (Praia, Santioago) PDF Print E-mail
MARCH 2004 - the Government of Cape Verde gave notice that they will build an international airport at Praia on the island of Santiago.

They expected this to be complete in early 2005 and operational by April 2005. This airport would be able to take direct flights from Europe and allow mid-sized aircraft such as Airbus 320 and 319 and Boeing 757 and 737 to operate. Direct flights from London, Amsterdam or Paris to Santiago will take approx. 5 3/4 hours.
So far both TACV (Cape Verde airlines) and TAP (Air Portugal) have announced that they will operate a service between Praia and Lisbon. An "open skies" policy is now in force, this allows other airlines to fly to Cape Verde. Charter airlines currently connect Milan and Rome to Sal (Volare, Azzura), Frankfurt to Sal (Condor), Lisbon to Sal (Air Luxor). Although these airlines have not announced plans to service these routes, it is expected that with increased tourist accomodation on the Island of Santiago, the demand for flights will increase and this will lead to more carriers, flights and competetive prices.
