Minister of the Economy, Growth and Competitiveness José Brito has signed an accord with the Japanese government for the financing of a large-scale energy project for the island of Santiago. The 3,1270,600,000-escudo accord is aimed at reinforcing the island’s electricity production, transportation and distribution capacity.

The accord with the Japanese government, by way of the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation, is the result of correspondence between Cape Verdean Minister of Finance Cristina Duarte and the Japanese ambassador accredited in Cape Verde.

According to a press release from the Ministry of the Economy, the accord is intended to finance “a structural project in partnership with the African Development Bank to alleviate the problem of the production and distribution of electricity on Santiago. This project includes the construction of a 60-Kilovolt energy transportation cable to the interior of the island of Santiago and the reinforcement of the production capacity of the Palmarejo power plant by 20 Megawatts, centralizing energy production for the entire island.”
