| 30/05/06 - CV raised to 'Developing Country' status |
More than 30 ambassadors representing foreign countries and international organizations will participate beginning today in a meeting called by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss and plan a strategy in order to ensure that Cape Verde’s transition from Least Developed Country to Developing Country will be a smooth one.
According to one diplomatic source, one of the results the government hopes will come out of the meeting is the constitution of a group to support Cape Verde during the transition period of its graduation from the United Nations’ list of Least Developed Countries (LDC), which will begin in 2008. The forming of this support group, the composition of which will be defined in the meeting itself, is the result of a study carried out by Cape Verdean and UN experts that also defined the resolution approving Cape Verde’s graduation from the list of LDCs. According to our source, this study recommends partners to grant Cape Verde facilities in accessing capital markets, new opportunities for public development aid, with a possible reduction in the foreign debt, and special treatment on the level of international trade, namely during the process for joining the World Trade Organization, which is already under way. The meeting, which will be attended by ambassadors from more than 20 countries, as well as representatives of the UN, the IMF, the European Commission and the African Development Bank, will take place in the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities at 9:00 am.
