Internet connections and international telephone communications are working normally again in Cape Verde after almost two weeks of near total isolation, due to an accident in which the underwater fiber optics cable linking the country to the rest of the world was cut by a boat. Repair work on the Atlantis II underwater cable, which was accidentlally cut by a boat entering Praia sea port nearly two weeks ago, was finally concluded this morning, April 27. The specialized vessel that carried out the operation arrived in Cape Verde Tuesday morning from France.
In a press release, Cabo Verde Telecom affirmed that it had tried to minimize the difficulties caused by the problem by leasing space on a satellite. The satellite did, indeed, allow users in Cape Verde access to the Internet, but only after one week of almost total isolation and, even then, at extremely slow speeds.
