Archeological excavations in Cidade Velha, the historical site on the island of Santiago whose candidacy as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is currently in preparation, will start up again in April by the Institute of Cultural Investigation and Patrimony, in partnership with Cape Verde’s Jean Piaget University and the UK’s Cambridge University.
Work will begin Monday, April 2. In addition to the specialists from Cambridge, an expert from UNESCO’s World Heritage Center is also in Cape Verde to work with the commission charged with elaborating Cidade Velha’s candidacy as a World Heritage Site. Architect Sébastien Moriset has already made two visits to Cidade Velha and met with members of the commission this week. Locales considered World Heritage Sites by UNESCO include forests, mountain ranges, lakes, deserts, buildings, complexes or cities, and are chosen as a function of their cultural or natural importance. The World Heritage Fund donates funds to spots selected as World Heritage Sites as long as certain conditions are met. Candidacies are submitted by the country in which the potential site is located.
