28/12/06 - ECOWAS accepts principle of special relationship with Cape Verde PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe last conference of Foreign Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) saw an accord that, in principle, will grant Cape Verde a special status within the organization. Cape Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities, Victor Borges, is expected to discuss the issue in a press conference today or tomorrow.

At the ECOWAS conference of Foreign Ministers, which took place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso on December 20, it was accepted that Cape Verde, as the only island country in the Community, may benefit from a special status within the organization.

According to a diplomatic source, “this is made possible by the ECOWAS treaty itself,” although nothing specific is outlined in the document. For this reason, affirms the source, anything is possible, including “Cape Verde’s adopting a special regime for the circulation of people and goods.”

Victor Borges is expected to call a press conference today or tomorrow to speak on the issue. Borges, in addition to participating in the ECOWAS conference of Foreign Ministers, was also to represent Cape Verdean President Cape Verde at the ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government on December 22 and 23 in Ouagadougou, but the summit was cancelled by Burkina Faso’s president, Blaise Compaoré, due to disturbances involving the military and police in the city.
