28/11/07 - Cape Verde jumps four slots on Human Development Index PDF Print E-mail

Cape Verde rose four spots in this year’s United Nations Human Development Index, and is now in 102nd place among the 177 countries analyzed. Cape Verde’s rating rose from 0.722 points to 0.736.

Last year, Cape Verde dropped one slot, from 105th to 106th place.

The United Nations Human Development Index evaluates countries not only based on their gross domestic product but also on indicators such as life expectancy, education and health.

According to the United Nations Development Program’s Human Development Report, Cape Verde is among those countries demonstrating mid-level human development, with a life expectancy of 71 and a combined schooling rate of 66.4%.

Among the world’s Portuguese-language countries, Cape Verde is surpassed on the index only by Portugal, which occupies 29th place, and Brazil, which comes in at 70th.
