ImageA total of 125,384 hotel stays were registered in Cape Verde in the first six months of 2006 alone, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. The figure represents a 33% increase over the same period in 2005.  The island of Sal remains that with the highest demand, having hosted 66.8% of all hotel room stays in the first half of 2006. Sal is followed by Santiago (16.5%) and São Vicente (8.4%). Only 7.4% of those occupying hotel rooms are Cape Verdeans residing in the country. The largest single nationality is made up of Italians (27.5%), followed by Portuguese (22.2%) and Germans (15.1%). All of them chose the island of Sal as their preferred island.

The total bed occupation rate in the first half of 2006 stood at 43%. On Sal, the rate totalled 53%, while on Santiago it stood at 35% and on Boa Vista, 32%.
