25/10/07 - Cape Verde granted special partner status by European Union PDF Print E-mail

The European Commission has approved the special partnership status between the European Union and Cape Verde, the Portuguese Prime Minister, José Sócrates said in Lisbon Wednesday.

The announcement was made at the end of a lunch with Cape Verde's Prime Minister, José Maria Neves, for whom approval of this status was “a historical moment.”

The partnership document will be sent to the European Parliament for ratification and will be definitively approved at the next meeting of the Council for General and Foreign Affairs, due to take place in Brussels on November 19 and 20.

According to Neves, the agreement is also, "a great victory for Cape Verde, for Africa, for Portugal and for Europe,” which will make it possible to “strengthen relations between the two continents.”
