23/01/07 - United Arab Emirates invest in tourism on Sao Vicente Island, Cape Verde PDF Print E-mail
ImageAn economic group from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) plans to invest 160 million euros in building a tourist on the Cape Verdean island of Sao Vicente, Cape Verde’s economy minister, José Brito said Monday in Mindelo.  The investment, which will be named Cesaria Resort, will create over 3,000 jobs and, according to the minister, is a wide-ranging and important project for Cape Verde.

The Cesaria Resort, one of the most ambitious and most costly tourist investments in Cape Verde, is expected to start next June and will cover an area of over 1,000 hectares.

The investment has arisen at a time when the archipelago is going through a growth spurt in tourism with around ten large tourism projects for the islands with greatest potential, such as Boa Vista, Santiago and Sao Vicente.

As an example, on the island of Santiago, in the Vale da Custa area, less than 10 kilometers from the capital, a resort known as Sambala Village is being built, with British funding of over 630 million euros.

The UAE project on Sao Vicente, in the area of Palha Carga, is expected to be concluded within seven years and the plan includes the construction of a village for Cape Verdean inhabitants for over 1,500 families as well as building the local access road.
