22/01/06 - PAICV appears headed for landslide victory

The PAICV appears to be on its way to obtaining its most positive election results ever. At the moment, the number of votes counted already gives the governing party 39 of the 72 seats in the National Assembly, Cape Verde’s parliament. Many have already begun celebrating what is turning into a sweeping victory at the party’s headquarters.....

São Filipe, Mosteiros, Brava, Porto Novo, Praia and São Vicente are, so far, the electoral circles in which the PAICV has clearly come out the winner, according data already made public by the Electoral Administration Department.

The MpD won the majority of votes on the island of Maio, with 1,542 as opposed to the PAICV’s 1,194.

In São Miguel, on the island of Santiago, the MpD is slightly ahead of the PAICV, while on the island of São Nicolau, the MpD is in the lead with 2,409 of the votes counted so far, as opposed to 2,060 for the PAICV.

On São Vicente the PAICV remains in the lead with 1,602 votes, followed by the MpD with 1,188 and the UCID with 485. The PRD is the least-voted party on the island, with just 14 votes.

In the electoral circles of Santa Catarina and Santa Cruz on the island of Santiago the PAICV enjoys a wide lead. In Porto Novo, on the island of Santo Antão, the PAICV is already celebrating victory.
