ImageCape Verde is interested in becoming one of five economic cooperation zones in Africa being planned by China, the islands’ economy minister, José Brito, has said. Brito said Tuesday that he had raised the matter during this week’s visit to Cape Verde of Chinese Deputy-Commerce Minister Wei Jianguo, telling the Beijing official that Praia hopes a final decision will favor the islands.

“Since the Chinese government has decided to create five zones, the prime minister has proposed Cape Verde is one of these areas. The visit of the Chinese delegation is the continuation of this request made by the prime minister. I think the Chinese have gathered all the information needed to make a decision,” said Brito, who also serves as minister for growth and competitiveness.

As part of Praia’s drive to become one of China’s new special economic zones in Africa, Brito will travel to Beijing in the near future.

The Praia and Beijing ministers inked an accord Tuesday under which Cape Verde acknowledged that China is a market economy and Praia supports the “One China” principle, as well as the consolidation of the emerging Asian economic superpower within the World Trade Organization.
