Following the Spain-Cape Verde Mixed Commission, which took place between March 15 and 19, the Spanish government decided to grant Cape Verde 27 million euros in financing over the course of the next three years. In addition to the continuation of the work that the Spanish Cooperation Agency has developed in Cidade Velha, the support will also be channeled into projects in the sectors of democratic governance, environmental sustainability, professional training and education and gender equity.
The Mixed Commission met in Madrid, with Cape Verde’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Victor Borges, heading the country’s delegation and Spain’s State Secretary for International Cooperation, Leire Pajín Iraola heading the Spanish delegation. The priority areas of cooperation for the 2007-2009 period were defined as democratic governance, with programs for the institutional strengthening of the legal and judicial system, and the promotion of the productive sector, with support for activities aimed at reducing food vulnerability. Education and professional training, health and the improvement of environmental sustainability in Cape Verde, with the conservation of biodiversity and vulnerable ecosystems and the promotion of ecotourism, are other priorities defined by the Mixed Commission. In the area of Cultural Cooperation for Development, Spain will continue to strengthen its ties to the Cidade Velha historical site, with investments in tourist promotion management and the integrated development of Ribeira Grande de Santiago, the municipality in which Cidade Velha is located. Finally, Spain will lend support to actions aimed at reducing gender inequity in Cape Verde.
