The group Maravilhas do Espaço is the winner of the 2007 Carnaval in Mindelo, grabbing the award granted by the São Vicente municipal chamber. The group, which participated in the city’s Carnaval parade for the first time in 12 years, also won Carnaval Queen, best song (authored by Dany and José Pedro Mariano) and best float. Maravilhas do Espaçlo took to the streets this year with Greek mythology as its theme, represented by four floats and more than 600 participants.

Djo Borias, the leader of the winning group, told Cape Verdean National Radio that Maravilhas do Espaço has yet to decide whether it will participate in next year’s Carnaval, as this year the group had “practically no support and a reduced budget of four or five million escudos.”

Second prize went to Flores do Mindelo, which also took Carnaval King and best standard-bearer, while third place went to Sonhos sem Limites.

São Vicente municipal chamber president Isaura Gomes distributed the 2007 Carnaval awards, announcing that the city is planning to create a Carnaval Museum in July, and asked groups to “keep samples of their costumes for display in the Museum.” The Museum will function next to the Jotamonte Academy of Music in Mindelo’s Monte Sossego district.
