20/05/07 - Population concerned about maintenance of new square in Praia PDF Print E-mail

ImagePope John Paul II Square was opened to the public Saturday following its official unveiling in an event that featured speeches by representatives from various entities, including John Paul II Association president Pedro Moreira, Father Boaventura Lopes, Praia mayor Felisberto Vieira and Prime Minister José Maria Neves. The new square was blessed by Praia Bishop Paulino Évora.

All of the speakers highlighted the quality of the newly opened square and recalled the life and work of Karol Wojitila, Pope John Paul II, and his friendship toward Cape Verde. Those attending the ceremony expressed their gratitude for having a new leisure space in their city

Although no one present at the ceremony questioned the rightness of paying homage to John Paul II or shed doubt on the quality of the square, what did prove to be the main concern of practically everyone was the prospects for the future maintenance of the square which, in most people’s opinion, should be a source of pride for Praia residents and all Cape Verdeans. According to Arnaldo da Luz, one of the many citizens who attended the ceremony, this pride has to do with the fact that the space was “blessed by Pope John Paul II when he came here” in January 1990.

83-year-old Domingas expressed her appreciation of the new square, saying “our country’s become modern now. More than this would be impossible.” Nearby, 72-year-old Tereza, who withstood the heat and sun to be able to attend the ceremony, called the space “pleasant.”

But with regards to the maintenance of the square, replete with gardens and modern playground and exercise equipment, Maria Manuela suggested Praia residents take care to “bring their children but instill respect in them so as not to ruin” the new space.
