| 20/05/06 - Cruises to visit Cape Verde Islands |
A delegation made up of representatives from port authorities in Las Palmas, Tenerife (Canary Islands) and Funchal (Madeira) is visiting the island of São Vicente today for a series of meetings and the signing of a collaboration accord between the Atlantic Cruise Association and Cape Verdean port management company Enapor. The signing of the accord, the main objective of which is to promote cruise ship tourism in the archipelagoes of the Atlantic Ocean, will be presided over by the Minister of Infrastructures, Transportation and the Sea, Manuel Inocêncio Sousa.
The accord is aimed at the promotion of cruise ship tourism on the islands making up Macaronesia, which includes the archipelagoes of the Azores, the Canary Islands, Madeira and Cape Verde. The accord will be signed at 5:00 pm Friday in a São Vicente hotel by the Madeira Autonomous Region Port Administration Agency, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority and the Las Palmas Port Authority - all of them members of the Cruises in the Atlantic Islands promotional association - and Cape Verde’s port management company Enapor. Establishing a permanent partnership between Enapor and Cruises in the Atlantic Islands in order to develop joint work in the improvement of tourist cruise ship traffic, to provide preferential treatment to the nation’s port authority and to exchange information on trade fairs and events is the main objective of the accord. Enapor believes that the development of cruise ship tourism holds great potential, as the market is relatively young and shows dynamic growth. “Cruise ship tourism is emblematic and provides ports with commercial prestige. It is a major vector for the economy of any city, region or country, with considerable competition existing today among the world’s ports in order to affirm themselves as destinations for cruises,” reads a press release from Enapor. Cape Verde’s ports possess favorable conditions for the docking of cruise ships, notably easy access, good navigational conditions and islands with tourist potential. The delegation’s visit to São Vicente includes a visit to the island’s sea port, followed by a work meeting of the Palmas/Enapor Interport Committee and the signing of the collaboration accord.
