19/12/06 - Cape Verde and Austria sign cooperation protocol
ImageCape Verde signed a cooperation protocol Monday, December 18, with Austria. The accord calls for the transfer of at least two million euros per year between now and 2008. The accord, negotiations for which began in 2005, encompasses, above all, areas such as the conservation and proper use of natural resources (especially water), decentralization and regional development.

In addition to support for specific projects, such as improvement to access to water and basic sewage and professional training, the accord also calls for funds to be included in Cape Verde’s State Budget.

In the opinion of António Pedro Alves Lopes, the director of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities, this budget aid “is a sign of trust” in Cape Verdean entities’ resource management capacity.

The resident representative of the Austrian Development Cooperation Agency, Eva Kohl, defines Cape Verde as a “priority country” for international cooperation. The diplomat expressed her confidence that the resources will be put to good use.
