A marine biologist has taken the first photos showing the presence of humpback whales in Sal’s Murdeira Bay this week. The species’ mating season is currently under way. Although the presence of humpback whales in Murdeira Bay during mating season has been registered in the past, particularly between the months of February and May, only now have video and photographic images of the mammals in the natural marine reserve on the island of Sal been captured. These species is distinguished by its enormous flippers and a characteristic “hump” on the frontal portion of the dorsal fin. The species is found in all of the planet’s oceans.
