Beginning today, Friday, January 18, the island of São Vicente will welcome a delegation from the Chinese municipality of Shenzen, headed by its vice-mayor Zhuo Qinrui. The mission’s visit to Cape Verde, which began yesterday, January 17, and will last until the 20th, is aimed at strengthening ties between the two municipalities.

According to a press release from investment and tourism promotion agency Cabo Verde Investimentos, Shenzen is one of China’s largest cities and is planning to invest in Cape Verde and São Vicente, which intends to be one of five Chinese economic zones in Africa. “It is hoped that, within this context Shenzen may support Cape Verde’s intentions with central Chinese authorities,” reads the press release.

It was with this in mind, continues Cabo Verde Investimentos, that the government lent its support to the Shenzen-São Vicente sister-city program, the protocol for which will be signed Saturday, January 19. Central authorities also hope Shenzen can help Cape Verde in the conception and publicizing of its Special Economic zones.
