Cape Verde will have a new telecommunications company providing Internet services within the first half of the year. The company in question has already been licensed by the National Communications Agency.

The National Communications Agency authorized Cabocom, headquartered on the island of Sal, to provide Internet services throughout the entire country on February 1.

Prior to February 1, two companies were authorized to provide Internet services: Cabo Verde Multimédia (a part of the Cabo Verde Telecom group) and São Vicente-based CVWiFi, which received its license on December 21, 2007, but has yet to begin operating. The CV Telecom group had already lost its monopoly on mobile telecommunications with the entrance on the market of a second cellular phone operator, T+, which resulted in the lowering of rates.

With the entry of a new provider on the market, Cape Verde will now have three operators functioning throughout the country’s entire territory. This increase in competitiveness is expected to reduce the cost of telephone and Internet services, considered to be among the most expensive in Africa.
