| 12/01/07 - Spain to open embassy in Cape Verde |
Spain will open a permanent diplomatic mission in the city of Praia. The decision by the Spanish cabinet was announced yesterday, January 10, in the country’s official state bulletin. The creation of a Spanish embassy in Cape Verde was agreed upon on December 22, 2006, in a meeting of the country’s Council of Ministers, or cabinet. The law decree, however, only went into effect yesterday following its publication in the official bulletin.
Both the date of the opening of the diplomatic mission and the diplomat to be chosen to represent Spain’s interests in Cape Verde remain to be revealed. The Spanish government has been looking for a building to house its embassy in Praia for several months, but has had some difficulty finding installations to set up the embassy and the ambassador’s residence. According to the decree, the creation of an embassy in the archipelago is aimed at “supporting the presence of Spanish companies,” “fostering cooperation” in areas such as fishing and migratory flows and “channeling Spain’s cooperative efforts more adequately in the country.” The decree also stresses that relations between Spain and Cape Verde “have developed intensely over the past several years,” particularly with regards to the Canary Islands. Currently Spain is Cape Verde’s third most important commercial partner. Cape Verde is also referred to as “the fourth country in Africa in terms of economic growth over the past 25 years,” with political stability and a relevant geographic situation.
