The Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture is carrying out a well-digging campaign on the island of São Nicolau in an effort to provide more water for both agriculture and human consumption. The operation, which will result in at least an additional seven wells, will mostly benefit the municipality of Ribeira Brava, which is currently suffering from a reduction in the water table that has left it with one-third of the water supply it had, for example, a mere three years ago. Local Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture delegate Adilson Melício reveals that the Cabeçalinho well has already been concluded and will reinforce the supply of water to Ribeira Brava, and that in two weeks’ time another well will be completed in Fajã de Baixo, water from which will be used for agriculture. According to Melício, the Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture also dug a well in Praia Branca, in the municipality of Tarrafal de São Nicolau, which will be used to irrigate an agricultural perimeter there and which will benefit more than 20 families. The program calls for the digging of another three wells in the districts of Queimadas, Caleijão and Preguiça.
