Cape Verde hopes to obtain new resources for the financing of environmental projects from the World Environment Fund in light of the recent acknowledgement on the part of the institution’s general assembly that special attention must be paid to the specificities of environmentally vulnerable island nations.
In the meeting, which took place in Cape Town, South Africa, the WEF adopted new modes of financing that contemplate, among other things, the evaluation of countries’ performance in the utilization of the funds previously made available to them. Criteria to be taken into consideration in the evaluation of the funds made available to countries should include variables related to insularity and environmental vulnerability, which represents a gain for nations such as Cape Verde, which have long attempted to raise awareness regarding this condition as a determining factor in the differentiated treatment they believe they should be afforded. Various environmental projects under way in the country currently benefit from WEF financing, namely those related to protected areas in natural parks such as Serra Malagueta on the island of Santiago and Monte Gordo on the island of São Nicolau. Also being financed by the WEF are projects in the realm of climate and sea change, among others. According to the Minister of Agriculture, the Environment and Fishing, Madalena Neves, who participated in the Cape Town meeting, the fund may also help finance the implementation of a new program linked to micro-credit. |
