The governments of Cape Verde and Japan will sign an accord today for the implementation of the extension of the installations of the Mindelo Fishing Port on the island of São Vicente. The Japanese government will donate 306 million yen to the project. The signing of the accord is to take place at the Japanese Embassy in Senegalese capital Dakar, with the ambassadors of Cape Verde and Japan in Senegal representing their respective countries. The project in question is aimed at resolving problems related to the insufficient supply of ice to individual and semi-industrial fishing vessels operating in the waters around São Vicente, thus contributing to the increment in the exportation of fish products, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. New installations will be built and new equipment will be acquired to respond to Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point norms and facilitate the export of fish to European Union countries. This is not the first time the Japanese government has supported the fishing sector in Cape Verde. In the past, it financed two major projects aimed at supporting traditional fishing methods - the expansion of the fishing port at Praia sea port in 2004 and the Mindelo fishing port on São Vicente’s Cova d’Inglesa beach.
