05/12/06 - Cape Verde: a “low price” rival to the Caribbean PDF Print E-mail
ImageUntil last year it was unknown as a tourist destination to the British, but in 2006 Cape Verde quickly became one of the preferred vacation destinations for English and Irish holiday makers. Indeed, an article published this week in the newspaper The Independent affirmed that the islands are now a “low price” rival to the Caribbean.

“It’s an obvious choice, although we had never heard of Cape Verde until last year,” English accountant James Longton told the British newspaper. Longton purchased a two-bedroom vacation apartment in one of the resorts currently under construction on the island of Santiago. “Travel is easy and cheap and the country is enchanting and preserved,” stressed Longton.

The article says that “Cape Verde is one of the most exciting new markets for the British,” and explains that the trip is neither as expensive nor as long as that necessary to travel to the Caribbean: “It’s just six hours away on direct flights, and there is no jet lag because the time difference in relation to the United Kingdom is just one hour,” says the newspaper.

The article also highlights the “accessible” price of the apartments, many of them in luxury tourist enterprises being built all over the islands by British investors.  The article also describes Cape Verde’s climate and its attractions for tourists, but also asks “How long will this country remain preserved?” considering the multiplication of British resorts on the islands. A question that only time will answer.
