A total of 88 turtles have finally hatched from the 110 eggs laid on the night of July 7 on Mindelo’s Laginha beach, on the island of São Vicente. The hatching took place on Saturday night, and the animals were immediately helped along into the sea at nearby Lazareto beach.
The hatching began to take place at approximately 10:50 pm. The hatchlings were placed in the sea to continue their life cycle in the most natural way possible. The animals averaged 41 millimeters in length. According to biologist Sónia Merino, the remaining 22 eggs were not fertilized, but even so the percentage of eggs hatched was considered positive. The survival rate for the species, however, is low: only one or two of every 1,000 hatchlings survive. |
