03/10/06 - Government to replace meteorological equipment at São Vicente airport PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe Minister of Infrastructures and Transportation, Manuel Inocêncio Sousa, has announced that the problems that have prevented night flights from arriving in or taking off from São Vicente’s São Pedro airport will soon be resolved. According to Inocêncio Sousa, the situation, which has lasted for approximately one month, is the result of technical problems in the airport’s meteorological equipment, the substitution of which will occur briefly.

According to the Minister of Infrastructures and Transportation, night flights to and from the island of São Vicente have been temporarily suspended because some of the meteorological equipment at the island’s São Pedro airport is inoperational, and TACV affirms that, as such, it is not in a position to assure the safety of night flights.

Cape Verde’s largest opposition party, the MpD, has pressured the government to resolve the problem, which has, at the very least, been inconvenient for those wishing to travel to São Vicente - those most affected are passengers arriving at Praia’s international airport from Amsterdam and Las Palmas and who, as a result of the absence of night flights, are forced to spend the night in the capital city before heading to their final destination.

Inocêncio Sousa has guaranteed that the equipment will soon be replaced. "It’s time for the equipment to be substituted so that we can resume night flights to São Vicente," affirmed the minister, who nevertheless declined to specify a date for the normalization of the airport’s meteorological system.
