The Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture has begun tests to pump water from at least six new wells in various zones on the island of São Nicolau.

According to local Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture delegate Adislon Melício, the tests began in Cabeçalinho and will continue in the wells in Queimadas, Fajã, Prainha, and Caleijão, among other locales.

Melício adds that the campaign currently under way for the exploration of the island’s water resources will continue Monday, march 3, with a second well to be dug in Fajã valley. Five more wells are planned for the rest of the island.

The Agriculture Ministry delegate says that more than 35 million escudos have been employed on the well project so far, which is aimed at mobilizing more water for agriculture and human consumption on the island, especially in the town of Ribeira Brava.
